Description
Rendered in a left lateral, x-ray style view, the venous drainage of the male head and neck is traced from the scalp and face into the cervical trunks. Superficial temporal and facial tributaries converge toward the retromandibular region, then drain into the internal and external jugular veins that descend inferiorly from the cranial base toward the thoracic inlet. Posteriorly, smaller channels along the occipital region and nuchal soft tissues track adjacent to the cervical vertebrae, while the jugular pathway remains anterolateral to the cervical spine and deep to the mandibular angle. Blue venules and communicating veins fill in the collateral network. Clinical relevance is strongest at the jugular confluence and along the compressible segments of the neck, where anatomy guides venous access and interpretation of distension. This lateral perspective helps clarify why internal jugular cannulation targets the vein within the carotid sheath, lateral to the common carotid artery, while the external jugular runs more superficially across the sternocleidomastoid and is prone to variation. Landmark anatomy matters. It also supports teaching around raised jugular venous pressure, thrombosis related to central lines, and patterns of venous spread in deep neck infection.
