Description
Anteriorly, the superficial and deep venous drainage of the male head and neck is presented bilaterally, with the facial vein descending from the angular vein near the medial canthus and coursing inferiorly toward the submandibular region. Lateral to this, the superficial temporal and occipital veins collect blood from the scalp and converge toward the retromandibular vein, while the external jugular vein tracks inferiorly superficial to the sternocleidomastoid toward the subclavian vein. Medial, the internal jugular veins descend within the carotid sheath from the jugular foramen to the brachiocephalic veins, which unite superior to the heart; the trachea remains midline as a pale airway column posterior to the superficial venous planes. The heart sits inferior in the mediastinum as the central pump receiving the great systemic venous return. An anterior perspective like this clarifies the common confluent pathways at the venous angle, where the internal jugular and subclavian veins form the brachiocephalic vein, a landmark that matters for central venous catheter placement and for understanding complications such as malposition or pneumothorax during infraclavicular access. Surface level veins are not just academic: prominence or asymmetry of the external jugular vein can signal elevated right atrial pressure, and the retromandibular and facial venous connections explain how infections in the “danger triangle” of the face can spread toward the cavernous sinus via emissary and ophthalmic venous routes.
