Description
Arising from the superficial venous plexus of the anterior scalp and face, the facial vein tracks inferiorly and slightly lateral to the midline, then passes toward the submandibular region before joining deeper drainage at the upper neck. Medial to the sternocleidomastoid margins, paired anterior jugular veins descend on the anterolateral neck, often with visible asymmetry, and communicate across the midline via a jugular venous arch just superior to the suprasternal (jugular) notch. Deeper, the internal jugular veins course inferiorly within the carotid sheath, lateral to the common carotid arteries, receiving tributaries that mirror the cerebral venous outflow shown on the cortical surface. Blue coloration and a transparent male body context keep the venous pathways legible against the underlying brain and cervical anatomy. An anterior rendering like this helps you teach what is easy to miss in cadaveric dissection: the superficial-to-deep transitions and the anatomic variability of the anterior jugular vein and jugular venous arch, structures that matter in low anterior neck procedures.
