Description
Posteriorly, the right lung is rendered semi-transparent to expose the venous return as it courses toward the left atrium. Superior and inferior right pulmonary veins emerge from the hilar region, collecting venules from the upper, middle, and lower lobes and converging medially as they pass anterior to the right main bronchus and posterior to the pericardial silhouette. The trachea bifurcates superiorly into the main bronchi, with segmental bronchial branching shown within the parenchyma as a positional reference for the venous pathways. Color separation between bronchi and vessels keeps the hilum legible. Posterior orientation matters when you are teaching or planning around the pulmonary hilum, where veins, arteries, and bronchi cross in a predictable but easily confused arrangement. On CT pulmonary venography or contrast-enhanced chest CT, the right superior pulmonary vein is a common landmark for left atrial anatomy and for recognizing partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, while the right inferior pulmonary vein often draws attention during atrial fibrillation ablation because pulmonary vein ostia are frequent sources of ectopic triggers. Misidentifying venous ostia can also complicate surgical or thoracoscopic approaches to the right hilum. Small errors here have consequences.
