Description
From a right lateral perspective, the right superior and right inferior pulmonary veins are seen coursing medially and slightly posteriorly to enter the posterior wall of the left atrium, with their ostia positioned superior and inferior to one another. The right atrium and right ventricle form much of the anterior contour in this projection, while the pulmonary trunk and right pulmonary artery pass superiorly and posteriorly toward the right lung hilum. Along the epicardial surface, the right coronary artery runs in the atrioventricular groove with accompanying cardiac veins, and the ascending aorta rises superiorly from the left ventricle before curving into the aortic arch. Attention to the right pulmonary venous entries matters in left atrial procedures where pulmonary vein anatomy defines both access and risk. Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation targets tissue around the pulmonary vein ostia, and a right-sided view helps clarify how the right superior pulmonary vein sits closer to the atrial roof while the right inferior pulmonary vein approaches the posterior-inferior atrium near the interatrial groove.
