Description
Centered in the thorax, the left atrium receives the paired right and left pulmonary veins as they course medially from the pulmonary hila and widen near their ostia. Superior and inferior pulmonary veins on each side approach the posterior aspect of the heart, running anterior to the bronchi and close to the pericardial reflection before entering the atrial wall. An x-ray style translucency reveals the venous caliber changes at the cardiac entry point and the relationship to the ventricles and proximal great vessels. Color contrast separates pulmonary venous channels from adjacent vascular and neural elements. Pulmonary veins matter because their anatomy drives both electrophysiology and thoracic procedures, and small spatial differences at the venoatrial junction can be clinically decisive. Atrial fibrillation commonly originates from ectopic foci in myocardial sleeves extending into the pulmonary veins, so a clear view of the ostia and proximal segments supports teaching catheter ablation targets and the rationale for pulmonary vein isolation.
