Description

Lateral skin-surface dissection of the male upper limb reveals the brachium tapering into the antebrachium, with the humerus proximal to the radius and ulna and the elbow joint centered between. Along the posterolateral arm, the triceps brachii mass and its tendon course toward the olecranon, while the anterior compartment contours transition into the mobile muscle bellies of the forearm. Distally, the radius sits lateral (thumb side) to the ulna, and the carpal and metacarpal skeleton provides a rigid framework beneath the superficial flexor and extensor tendons. Tendon paths are easy to follow here. Flexor carpi ulnaris is positioned on the ulnar (medial) side of the forearm but reads clearly from a lateral projection because its fusiform belly and distal tendon create a distinct border toward the wrist, running from the region of the medial epicondyle and proximal ulna to the pisiform, hook of hamate, and base of the fifth metacarpal. That course matters in ulnar-sided wrist pain and in differentiating flexor carpi ulnaris tendinopathy from triangular fibrocartilage complex injury on exam and ultrasound. Proximally, the relationship of the flexor-pronator origin to the medial epicondyle also supports teaching around golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) and the adjacent ulnar nerve at the cubital tunnel. Educators will find this lateral arm and forearm view useful for upper-limb anatomy labs, kinesiology teaching on wrist flexion and ulnar deviation, and for illustrating compartment-based discussions of the brachium in surgical texts.
