Description
Inferior exposure of the oral cavity floor centers on the paired mylohyoid muscles, their right and left sheets meeting at a midline raphe and slinging from the mylohyoid line of the mandible down toward the body of the hyoid. Anteriorly, the mandibular teeth and alveolar arch frame the superior attachment, while posteriorly the free border of the mylohyoid approaches the hyoid region where the geniohyoid and tongue musculature (including the genioglossus seen from below) relate immediately superior. Lateral margins grade toward the submandibular region, with the digastric bellies and adjacent suprahyoid soft tissues forming the muscular contour beneath the mandible. Orientation is anatomical and inferior, so structures that normally lie superior to the mylohyoid appear deeper toward the oral cavity. Clear boundaries. Understanding the mylohyoid from below matters because it partitions the sublingual space from the submandibular space, a distinction that drives how odontogenic infection spreads and why Ludwig angina can rapidly compromise the airway despite a dental origin.
