Description
Across the palmar aspect of the male hand, the oblique retinacular ligaments (Landsmeer) are traced along the volar-lateral margins of the fingers, running distally from the level of the proximal phalanx toward the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Each band lies anterior to the phalanges and adjacent to the fibrous digital sheath, with a close relationship to the flexor tendon apparatus (flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus tendons) that courses centrally along the digits. Proximal landmarks include the metacarpals and metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, with the palmar skin removed to expose the tendinous and connective tissue planes. Fine anatomy matters here. Functionally, the oblique retinacular ligament couples motion between the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and DIP joints by linking the flexor sheath/volar plate region to the terminal extensor mechanism, so PIP extension tensions the band and assists DIP extension. This anterior perspective helps when teaching and planning treatment for boutonniere deformity, where disruption of the central slip and imbalance of the extensor apparatus alters PIP and DIP mechanics, and when considering surgical reconstruction or tenolysis around the digital sheath. It also clarifies why scarring after flexor tendon injury can restrict independent DIP extension despite an intact terminal tendon. Hand surgery lectures, anatomy practicals, and rehabilitation protocols often need a clean depiction of these fibrous retinacular connections without the distraction of dorsal extensor hood layers. Use it in a journal figure or operative atlas to orient readers to the palmar surgical field at the level of the phalanges, tendon sheath, and interphalangeal joints.
