Longitudinal smooth muscle fibers of the small intestine are presented as the outer muscular layer (stratum longitudinale tunicae muscularis), arranged parallel to the long axis of the gut tube and lying superficial to the circular layer (stratum circulare). Deep to these fibers, the submucosa and mucosa would occupy a more central position, while serosa or adventitia forms the most external covering depending on the intestinal segment. Between the longitudinal and circular layers, the myenteric (Auerbach) plexus is the expected neural plane that coordinates contraction patterns along the enteron. Functionally, longitudinal fibers shorten the bowel segment while the circular layer narrows the lumen, and their coordinated, propagated activity generates peristaltic waves that move luminal contents distally. This arrangement matters in postoperative ileus and other dysmotility states, where impaired enteric neural signaling or smooth muscle responsiveness blunts propulsion despite a patent lumen. It also frames the surgical and endoscopic reality that the myenteric plexus sits exactly where dissection, cautery, or ischemia can disrupt coordinated motility. A key teaching point.
