Description
Cut through the small intestine wall, the mucosa forms prominent plicae circulares with fingerlike villi projecting into the lumen, while microvilli are implied along the apical surface of enterocytes at the brush border. Deep to the lamina propria and muscularis mucosae, the submucosa carries arterioles and venules that feed the intestinal villus capillary beds, then the muscularis externa sits more peripherally with inner circular and outer longitudinal smooth muscle. Adjacent arterial anatomy is rendered in layered detail, with tunica intima lining the lumen, a smooth muscle rich tunica media, and a collagenous tunica externa (adventitia) containing vasa vasorum and accompanying nerve fibers. Layer-by-layer context matters in the gut because mucosal absorption, immune sampling, and vascular delivery are all constrained by the same architecture, and pathology often tracks those boundaries.
