Description
Seen from the inferior aspect of the skull base, the palatine bone is identified at the posterior quarter of the hard palate where its horizontal plate lies posterior to the maxillae and anterior to the choanae. Medially, its posterior nasal spine borders the inferior edge of the vomer and contributes to the bony framework around the posterior nasal apertures, while laterally the palatine bone meets the alveolar and palatine processes near the greater palatine foramen and grooves that transmit the greater palatine neurovascular bundle onto the oral surface. Posteriorly the hard palate gives way to the pterygoid region of the sphenoid, and more posterior still the foramen magnum is visible in the occipital bone. Clean landmarks. The zygomatic arches sit laterally as orientation points. For clinicians, the inferior view of the palatine bone matters because it ties oral cavity landmarks to nasal airway anatomy and to the course of the descending palatine artery and greater palatine nerve as they emerge onto the palate. The posterior margin of the horizontal plate and posterior nasal spine define the bony limit that surgeons and dentists reference in cleft palate repair planning, palatal flap design, and local anesthetic blocks at or near the greater palatine foramen. Septal alignment is also contextualized by the vomer’s relationship to the posterior nasal septum, a frequent consideration in choanal atresia workups and endoscopic nasopharyngeal approaches.
