Description

Oriented to the cranial base in an inferior perspective, the occipital bone (os occipitale) is presented with the foramen magnum occupying the central field, its margins formed by the basilar part anteriorly, the lateral parts on either side, and the squamous part posteriorly. Flanking the foramen magnum, the occipital condyles project inferolaterally and articulate with the superior articular facets of the atlas, while the hypoglossal canals course anterolaterally through the condylar bases. Posterior to each condyle, the condylar fossa and potential condylar canal sit near the groove of the sigmoid sinus as it continues toward the jugular foramen at the petro-occipital junction. Clear midline geometry. Clinically, this inferior occipital view is the working map for the craniovertebral junction, where basilar invagination, occipitalization of the atlas, and atlanto-occipital instability alter the contour and relationships around the foramen magnum. It also supports surgical orientation for far-lateral and transcondylar approaches to ventrolateral foramen magnum lesions, because safe drilling margins depend on the occipital condyle footprint and the expected course of the hypoglossal canal. Small errors here injure lower cranial nerves. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy labs to teach bony landmarks for CN XII and the atlanto-occipital joints, or in neurosurgical and ENT teaching files that discuss foramen magnum meningioma exposure, Chiari-related decompression planning, and occipital condyle fracture patterns.
