Description
Rendered with a transparent male cranial context, the occipital bone occupies the posterior cranial base around the foramen magnum, with its squamous part positioned posterior and superior to the opening and the basilar part extending anteriorly toward the sphenoid. Along the superolateral margins, the lambdoid (lambdoidal) border articulates with the parietal bones at the lambdoid suture, while the occipitomastoid region lies more inferolateral, approaching the temporal bones. Sutural serrations define the cranial vault junctions. Bony relief around the foramen magnum is prominent. A superiorly oriented presentation of the occiput is a workhorse for teaching cranial sutures and skull-base orientation, but the inclusion of the foramen magnum makes it clinically grounded: it frames the cervicomedullary junction where Chiari I malformation, foramen magnum meningiomas, and occipital condyle fractures are assessed. Landmarks at this level guide approaches that start posteriorly, including suboccipital craniectomy, where the relationship of the occipital bone to the cranial vault and posterior fossa dictates bone removal and safe working angles.
