Description
Centered on the occipital bone around the foramen magnum, the superior (endocranial) surface is rendered transparent to expose the sulci for the dural venous sinuses. Medially, the internal occipital protuberance and internal occipital crest align with the posterior margin of the foramen magnum, while the grooves for the transverse sinuses course posterolaterally toward the mastoid region and the groove for the superior sagittal sinus approaches from the midline. Broad basilar and lateral portions frame the opening, with the occipital condyles positioned inferolaterally for articulation with the atlas. A clean bony map. Teaching the endocranial topography of the occiput often stalls at the idea that sinuses are soft tissue structures, yet their bony impressions guide orientation in the posterior cranial fossa and explain why venous bleeding can be brisk when these channels are violated. This angle is also useful for correlating fracture lines of the cranial base with potential injury to the sigmoid and transverse sinuses, and for appreciating how posterior fossa approaches (for example, suboccipital craniotomy) relate to midline landmarks such as the internal occipital crest and confluence of sinuses. Neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses can pair this view with dural reflections to teach the tentorium cerebelli attachment and venous sinus drainage patterns without losing the student in a full skull base montage.
