Positioned at the posterior third of the hard palate, the palatine bone appears in sagittal section with its horizontal plate forming the posterior border of the bony palate and its perpendicular plate ascending superiorly along the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. Anterior to it, the maxilla completes the remainder of the hard palate, while superiorly the palatine articulations relate to the sphenoid region and the posterior nasal aperture.
