Description
Centered in a sagittal section of the male head, the maxilla forms the anterior midface and hard palate, with its alveolar process bearing the maxillary teeth inferiorly. Superior to the dental roots, the maxillary sinus occupies the body of the maxilla as a large air cavity, positioned lateral to the nasal cavity and inferior to the orbit. Posteriorly, the maxilla meets the palatine bone at the hard palate and approaches the pterygoid region of the sphenoid, while the mandible sits inferior and slightly posterior as the opposing jaw. Cervical vertebrae extend inferiorly beneath the cranial base, providing orientation to the head and neck axis. Appreciating the maxilla in sagittal profile helps when you need to teach or plan around the relationship between tooth roots, the maxillary sinus floor, and the nasal cavity, since only a thin plate of bone may separate odontogenic infection from the sinus.
