Description

Each maxilla occupies the central midface inferior to the orbits and lateral to the piriform aperture, with the frontal process ascending superiorly along the lateral margin of the nasal bones toward the frontal bone. Laterally, the maxillary body approaches the zygomatic bone at the zygomaticomaxillary region, and the infraorbital foramen sits on the anterior surface inferior to the infraorbital margin. Sutural lines are faint but legible. An anterior view like this clarifies surface landmarks that clinicians palpate and surgeons plan around, including the infraorbital foramen transmitting the infraorbital nerve and vessels. Injury patterns of midfacial trauma make more sense when the maxilla’s buttress architecture is anchored to visible neighbors, from the nasomaxillary region medially to the zygomaticomaxillary pillar laterally, which guides reduction and fixation in Le Fort fractures.
