Description
Seen from an inferior perspective, the transparent maxilla frames the hard palate and the maxillary dental arch, with the alveolar process forming the tooth sockets of the upper jaw. Posteriorly, the palatine processes of the maxilla meet the horizontal plates of the palatine bones at the transverse palatine suture, while the midline is marked by the median palatine suture. Laterally, the alveolar arch curves toward the maxillary tuberosity and the pterygomaxillary region, and anteriorly the incisive fossa region lies just superior to the anterior alveoli. Landmarks read clearly. This angle is the workhorse view for teaching how the maxilla contributes to both the oral cavity and the nasal cavity, and it maps directly onto dental and ENT procedures. The relationship between the alveolar bone and the floor of the maxillary sinus becomes easier to appreciate when the cranium is transparent, a key point when planning extractions of maxillary molars, sinus lift procedures, or evaluating an oroantral communication. You also get a clean sense of where a Le Fort I osteotomy travels above the apices of the teeth and across the lateral maxillary wall.
