Description
Seen in lateral full-body profile, the pectoral fascia forms a thin investing sheet over pectoralis major on the anterolateral thoracic wall, blending superiorly toward the clavicle and sternum and coursing inferiorly toward the costal margin and upper abdominal aponeuroses. Laterally it thickens as it approaches the anterior axillary fold and continues into the axillary fascia that spans the base of the axilla. Deep to it lie pectoralis major and, more medially and posteriorly, the pectoralis minor and clavipectoral fascia, with the deltopectoral interval positioned superolaterally near the deltoid and cephalic vein. A fascial plane, not a muscle belly. That lateral relationship to the axillary fascia matters in both dissection and the operating room because the pectoral fascia defines a surgical layer for elevating skin flaps in mastectomy and for developing the prepectoral pocket in implant-based breast reconstruction. When surgeons raise the pectoralis major in subpectoral augmentation or access the axilla for sentinel lymph node biopsy, staying on or just deep to this membrane helps control bleeding from perforators and reduces traction on the lateral pectoral nerve branches. Its continuity into the axilla also frames how edema and infection can track, and why axillary contracture can tether the anterior axillary fold after surgery or burns. Use this asset in gross anatomy and regional anatomy teaching to clarify superficial fascia versus deep investing fascia on the chest wall, and in surgical atlases covering mastectomy planes, axillary approaches, and prepectoral versus subpectoral reconstruction. It also suits patient-education materials that need an accurate full-body orientation while discussing chest wall incisions and axillary scarring.
