Description
Arising from the posterior aspect of the cranial base, the petrous ridge (superior border of the petrous part of the temporal bone) is traced as a sharp, obliquely oriented crest separating the middle cranial fossa superiorly from the posterior cranial fossa inferiorly. Along its superior margin, the animation tracks the sulcus for the superior petrosal sinus as it courses posterolaterally from the region of the petrous apex toward the lateral dural venous sinus complex. As the viewpoint holds in posterior orientation, adjacent landmarks come into register, including the posterior surface of the petrous temporal bone and its relationship to the occipital bone at the petro-occipital region. Bone contours change with slight rotational emphasis. The groove stays the reference line. Clinically, the superior petrosal sinus and its bony sulcus matter whenever you are correlating venous sinus anatomy with posterior fossa symptoms, otologic infection spread, or dural venous sinus thrombosis patterns. Neurosurgical approaches that work along the petrous ridge, including petrosal approaches to the cerebellopontine angle and tentorial edge, rely on this ridge as a hard landmark for the attached margin of the tentorium cerebelli and for predicting where venous bleeding is encountered. A static posterior skull base view often flattens the ridge and obscures how the sulcus angles toward the transverse-sigmoid junction; the animated sequence makes that spatial drift easier to teach.
