Description
Positioned deep in the posterior knee, the popliteus forms a triangular sheet running from the lateral femoral condyle to the posterior surface of the proximal tibia, just superior to the soleal line. Its tendon courses inferomedially, lying anterior to the popliteal vessels and immediately posterior to the knee joint capsule. Laterally, the muscle relates to the head of the fibula and the fibular (lateral) collateral ligament, while superiorly it sits inferior to the posterior aspect of the femoral condyles in the floor of the popliteal fossa. Small but distinct. Functionally, this posterior perspective is the one you want when teaching the “unlocking” mechanism of the knee: popliteus initiates flexion from full extension by internally rotating the tibia on the femur in open chain (or externally rotating the femur on the fixed tibia in closed chain). Its close relationship to the lateral meniscus matters, since popliteus traction helps retract the meniscus during knee flexion, a point often discussed in the setting of lateral meniscal tears and posterolateral corner injury. Surgeons also use popliteus and its tendon as landmarks when working around the popliteal artery and vein, where a few millimeters of depth and plane selection separates safe dissection from a vascular complication. Use this plate in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal anatomy courses when moving beyond the quadriceps and hamstrings to the deep posterior compartment and popliteal fossa.
