Positioned in the posterior knee within the popliteal fossa, the popliteal vein (with smaller venules converging into it) lies superficial to the popliteal artery and tracks proximally along the posterior aspect of the tibia toward the adductor hiatus, where it continues as the femoral vein. Superiorly, the distal femur frames the fossa, while the proximal tibia forms the inferior boundary; the patella sits anterior to the joint as a landmark for orientation even from a posterior perspective. Red arterial channels course adjacent to the blue venous pathway, emphasizing their close anatomic pairing behind the knee. Spatially, the main venous trunk remains centrally placed, with tributaries approaching from medial and lateral sides.
