Description
Oriented in a lateral perspective of the male knee, the popliteal vein runs within the popliteal fossa posterior to the distal femur and proximal tibia, receiving venous tributaries that track along the genicular region before continuing proximally as the femoral vein. From this angle, the vessel lies superficial to the popliteal artery, while the bony landmarks of the femoral condyles, tibial plateau, and the patella define the joint margins anteriorly. Articular cartilage caps the distal femur and proximal tibia at the tibiofemoral articulation. Relationship is the point. Clinically, the superficial position of the popliteal vein relative to the artery in the fossa underpins both vulnerability and access, it is the structure most often compressed first by a Baker cyst, postoperative hematoma, or popliteal fossa mass, and it is also the most common site of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis proximal to the calf veins. Lateral viewing clarifies why knee flexion can impede venous return and why duplex ultrasound or venography interpretations hinge on knowing which vessel should be encountered first in posterior knee approaches. That spatial ordering matters during posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, popliteal artery entrapment workup, and posterior knee trauma where vascular injury and thrombosis can coexist.
