Description
Oriented in left lateral profile, the superficial temporal vein ascends within the superficial fascia overlying the temporalis muscle, coursing superior to the zygomatic arch and anterior to the auricle as it collects venous tributaries from the scalp and forehead. Posteriorly, the vessel lies close to the superficial temporal artery, while branches of the auriculotemporal nerve track nearby in the preauricular region. Inferiorly, the venous channel approaches the parotid region, where venous drainage continues toward the retromandibular system. Bony landmarks such as the zygomatic arch and lateral margin of the mandible anchor the surface anatomy. A clean lateral view of the superficial temporal vein matters because this vessel is a practical landmark for both hemostasis and access. Minor trauma or lacerations in the temporal scalp can bleed briskly, and preauricular incisions during parotidectomy or rhytidectomy risk venous injury when the plane strays superficial to the parotid fascia. Cannulation is sometimes performed for scalp venous access in anesthesia and emergency settings when peripheral access is limited, and this view clarifies why the vessel can be palpable or visible in thin patients. Surface anatomy is the point. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy teaching to pair vascular pathways with fascial planes (temporoparietal fascia, parotid fascia) and adjacent nerves, or in surgical texts covering parotid approaches, facelift dissection, and management of temporal scalp lacerations.
