Description
Arising in the submental region beneath the mandibular symphysis, the submental vein courses posteriorly along the inferior border of the mandible toward its confluence with the facial vein. From a lateral head and neck orientation, it sits superficial to the mylohyoid and close to the anterior belly of the digastric, while the larger facial vein tracks posteroinferior to the angle of the mouth and along the mandibular body before descending toward the internal jugular system. Nearby muscular landmarks include the sternocleidomastoid laterally and the suprahyoid and infrahyoid strap muscles medially, with superficial sensory branches of the cervical plexus and adjacent venules shown in situ. Regional lymph nodes in the submental triangle and the mandibular ramus and upper cervical vertebrae provide additional spatial reference. Venous anatomy in the submental triangle matters because surgical and procedural work in this small space often turns on a few millimeters. This view supports planning for submental lipectomy, platysmaplasty, and approaches to the submandibular gland, where the submental vein and its tributaries can be a source of persistent oozing if not identified early. It also helps teach pathways for infection and thrombophlebitis spreading from the chin and lower lip through the facial venous network, a point that resonates when correlating with facial cellulitis or post-procedural complications. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and head and neck dissection labs to orient students to the suprahyoid triangles and superficial venous drainage patterns, or in surgical atlases and CME slides that cover submental approaches, facial vein exposure, and hemostasis.
