Seen from the lateral side, the posterior compartment of the male lower leg is defined by the superficial triceps surae, with gastrocnemius forming the proximal bulge of the calf and soleus lying deep and slightly more distal as it approaches the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. Anterior to this compartment, the tibia sits more medial and prominent, while the fibula tracks laterally, providing the bony line that separates posterior musculature from the anterolateral extensor and fibular groups. Proximally the distal femur and patella give knee orientation, and distally the Achilles tendon courses posterior to the ankle toward its insertion on the posterior calcaneus, with long foot tendons continuing into the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.
