Description
Seen from a posterior-lateral perspective, the vastus lateralis occupies the lateral compartment of the thigh, wrapping from the proximal femur toward its distal contribution to the quadriceps tendon. Along its deep surface, fibers arise in part from the lateral lip of the linea aspera and adjacent lateral intermuscular septum, placing the muscle posterior to the iliotibial tract but lateral to the posterior femoral shaft. Medially, the posterior thigh contour implies the hamstring group (biceps femoris laterally, semitendinosus and semimembranosus more medial) running inferiorly toward the knee, while distally the vastus lateralis approaches the lateral border of the patella before continuing as the lateral patellar retinaculum.
