Posteriorly, the proximal femur is framed by the pelvis and the upper thigh musculature, with the vastus lateralis occupying the lateral compartment and wrapping from the posterior-lateral femoral shaft toward the anterior knee as part of the quadriceps femoris. Its femoral attachments are placed along the gluteal tuberosity and the lateral lip of the linea aspera, just inferior to the region where the gluteus maximus inserts on the gluteal tuberosity and into the iliotibial tract. Medially, the posterior femur transitions toward the adductor compartment, while superiorly the posterior ilium, ischium, and sacral contours define the pelvic outlet above the hip joint.
