Description
Running along the lateral compartment of the anterior thigh, the vastus lateralis forms the dominant muscle belly of the quadriceps femoris as it arises from the lateral lip of the linea aspera and adjacent femoral shaft. Proximally, fibers sit inferior to the lateral margin of gluteus medius near the greater trochanter region, then sweep distally to converge into the quadriceps tendon and lateral patellar retinaculum. Deep to the muscle lies the femur, while the iliotibial tract would course superficially along the same lateral line toward Gerdy’s tubercle on the anterolateral tibia. Patella, tibia, and fibula anchor the distal relationships at the knee and proximal leg. Lateral orientation matters because vastus lateralis exerts a lateral pull on the patella, and imbalance against vastus medialis obliquus commonly contributes to patellofemoral maltracking, anterior knee pain, and lateral facet overload.
