Description
Prominent beneath the lateral thigh skin, the vastus lateralis forms the broad outer belly of the quadriceps femoris, draping over the lateral surface of the femoral shaft from proximal to distal. Anteriorly it blends with the rectus femoris and vastus intermedius, while posteriorly it abuts the lateral intermuscular septum and the hamstring compartment. Deep to the superficial fascia and fascia lata, its distal fibers converge into the quadriceps tendon and continue through the patella into the patellar ligament toward the tibial tuberosity.
