Description
Running along the lateral compartment of the thigh, the vastus lateralis occupies the outer surface of the femur, with its broad proximal origin spanning the greater trochanter, gluteal tuberosity, and lateral lip of the linea aspera before narrowing distally into the quadriceps tendon. From a true lateral perspective you can appreciate how its fibers sweep inferiorly and anteriorly toward the patella, sitting anterior to the biceps femoris and posterior to the tensor fasciae latae and iliotibial tract. The muscle belly lies lateral to vastus intermedius and blends medially with the quadriceps aponeurosis as it approaches the knee. Clear fiber direction. That lateral line of pull matters for patellofemoral mechanics: hypertrophy or tightness of vastus lateralis and the lateral retinaculum can bias the patella laterally, a common contributor to anterior knee pain and recurrent patellar instability in active patients. Surgeons and sports clinicians also use this anatomy when planning the anterolateral approach to the femoral shaft and when counseling on safe intramuscular injection sites in the mid-lateral thigh, where vastus lateralis offers a thick target away from the femoral neurovascular bundle.
