Profunda Brachii Artery, Anterior View

Description

Arising from the brachial artery in the proximal arm, the profunda brachii artery (deep artery of the arm) leaves the anterior neurovascular plane and courses posteriorly toward the humeral shaft, tracking laterally before spiraling into the posterior compartment. From this anterior perspective you can follow the brachial trunk distally in the medial bicipital groove, with the deep branch angling away toward the lateral arm where it typically accompanies the radial nerve through the triangular interval. Distal arterial continuations into the forearm and a parallel superficial venous channel are included to orient proximal branching and downstream perfusion. Clean vessel mapping. Clinically, the profunda brachii matters because it is the dominant arterial supply to the triceps and a key collateral route around the elbow via its radial collateral and middle collateral branches, which anastomose with recurrent arteries during brachial artery occlusion. Its close relationship to the radial nerve and the posterior humerus explains the combined neurovascular risk in midshaft humeral fractures and during posterior approaches to the humerus, where the vessel can be injured or used as a landmark in the spiral groove region. The branching point off the brachial artery is also a common reference during arm dissections and during evaluation of penetrating trauma to the lateral arm.
