Description
Curled within the amniotic cavity at approximately 35 weeks’ gestation, the fetus is shown in a flexed fetal posture with the rounded calvaria and facial profile occupying the more anterior portion of the field while the trunk and flexed lower limbs lie inferiorly and posteriorly. Scalp hair is visible over the developing skull, and formed external ears, hands, and feet can be distinguished along the lateral contours of the body. A helically coiled umbilical cord courses from the fetal umbilicus toward the placental disc, which is attached to the uterine wall and bordered by the chorionic membranes, all suspended in amniotic fluid.
