Description
Positioned within the uterine cavity, the conceptus is shown in flexion, with the head large relative to the trunk and the cervical region tucked anteriorly toward the thorax. Upper limbs lie anterolateral to the chest, with the hands near the face, while the hips and knees remain flexed so the feet sit inferior to the pelvis; individual digits of the hands and feet are discernible at this stage. A coiled umbilical cord courses from the fetal umbilicus to the placental insertion site (placenta itself not emphasized), suspended in amniotic fluid that is rendered as a diffuse red field suggestive of transillumination through the uterine wall. At approximately 21 weeks’ gestation, this posture and surface anatomy help learners correlate external morphologic milestones with internal organ maturation, such as the continued development of the bronchial tree and the onset of more coordinated fetal swallowing that influences amniotic fluid volume.
