Description
Oriented in lateral profile, the urinary bladder sits superior to the prostate gland, with the bladder neck tapering into the prostatic urethra as it descends inferiorly through the gland. Along the posterolateral bladder base, the inferior vesical artery gives off a prostatic branch that courses medially toward the prostatic capsule, running in close association with the venous plexus that surrounds the gland. A ureter enters the bladder posterolaterally, while the urethral outlet continues inferiorly from the vesical neck. Clear landmarks. Surgical and interventional planning often hinges on this arterial relationship. During transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), simple prostatectomy, or pelvic dissection for bladder outlet obstruction, bleeding frequently arises from capsular and periurethral branches derived from the inferior vesical system, and this lateral perspective clarifies where a prostatic branch approaches the gland relative to the bladder base. In prostate artery embolization, distinguishing prostatic supply from adjacent vesical branches helps reduce non-target embolization to the bladder neck and trigone.
