Description
Seen in lateral section through the male globe, the retina lines the posterior two thirds of the eye as the innermost sensory nervous layer, closely apposed to the vascular choroid and bounded externally by the sclera. Anteriorly, the neural retina thins toward the ora serrata near the ciliary body, while posteriorly it relates to the optic disc region where ganglion cell axons converge to form the optic nerve (even if the nerve itself lies beyond the cropped field). The vitreous body fills the chamber internal to the retina, and the optical media, cornea and lens, sit anterior to the vitreous along the visual axis. Layered anatomy matters here. This lateral perspective is the one most clinicians and educators use to explain retinal attachment and detachment: the neurosensory retina can separate from the retinal pigment epithelium and choroid, allowing subretinal fluid to track posteriorly and threaten the macula. Spatial relationships between vitreous, retina, and choroid also frame posterior vitreous detachment and retinal tears at areas of firm vitreoretinal adhesion, a common precursor to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. It also supports correlation with fundoscopy and OCT by mapping where light traverses the vitreous to reach photoreceptors and where vascular supply arises from the choroid. Use this illustration in ophthalmic anatomy teaching (medical school, optometry, and PA curricula), in patient-facing diagrams explaining floaters, flashes, and urgent detachment symptoms, or in textbook figures accompanying retinal pathology, vitrectomy, or scleral buckle discussions. It reproduces well for slide decks and clinical handouts that need a clean lateral cross-section of the eye with retina-choroid-sclera relationships.
