Description

Dominating the right (pulmonary) surface, the right atrium forms the most lateral cardiac contour, with the right ventricle contributing anteriorly and inferiorly toward the acute margin. Superiorly, the superior vena cava enters the atrium at the right border, while the inferior vena cava approaches the atriocaval region inferiorly near the diaphragmatic surface. Posterior to the atrium, the right pulmonary veins course toward the left atrium, which remains largely hidden from a strict right lateral view. Clinically, this right-sided profile is the one you mentally reconstruct when correlating a right heart border on a PA chest radiograph or when teaching why right atrial enlargement can alter the right mediastinal silhouette. It also matches the spatial orientation encountered during pericardiocentesis planning, where the relationship of the right atrium and right ventricle to the pericardial sac and diaphragmatic surface guides needle trajectory, and during electrophysiology procedures targeting the cavotricuspid isthmus between the tricuspid annulus and inferior vena cava. Landmarks matter. Use this artwork for gross anatomy labs, cardiothoracic surgery primers, and radiology teaching files that link surface anatomy to imaging signs of right atrial dilation, pericardial effusion, or right ventricular hypertrophy. It also suits patient-facing materials explaining right-sided chamber anatomy before ablation or device implantation. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
