Description
Posterior full-body skeletal anatomy is presented with both scapulae highlighted against the axial skeleton of an adult male. Each scapula lies on the posterolateral thoracic wall, spanning roughly the second through seventh ribs, with the scapular spine running transversely to divide the supraspinous fossa superiorly from the infraspinous fossa inferiorly. Lateral to the spine, the acromion projects superolaterally toward the clavicular region, while the inferior angle points caudally and the medial (vertebral) border parallels the thoracic spinous processes. Emphasis on the dorsal scapula makes this view well suited for teaching scapulothoracic mechanics and surface anatomy. The scapular spine and inferior angle are common palpation landmarks when assessing scapular dyskinesis, long thoracic nerve palsy (serratus anterior weakness with medial border winging), or spinal accessory nerve injury affecting trapezius and scapular elevation. Orthopedic planning also depends on this posterior orientation, since fracture patterns of the scapular body and spine, and approaches to the posterior shoulder girdle, are easiest to conceptualize relative to the thoracic cage and vertebral column. Landmarks matter. In gross anatomy lab manuals, kinesiology courses, and orthopedic education materials, the full-body posterior context helps learners anchor the shoulder girdle to the rib cage, vertebrae, pelvis, and long bones without losing laterality. It also fits well in clinical handouts for physical therapy and sports medicine when explaining scapular positioning during overhead activity or postural correction.
