Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the male pelvis and lower limb skeleton frames the course of the sciatic nerve as it exits the greater sciatic foramen inferior to piriformis and descends deep to gluteus maximus. From the posterior hip it runs inferiorly along the posterior thigh, positioned posterior to the femur and then approaching the popliteal fossa at the level of the distal femur and proximal tibia. Branching peripheral nerves track distally toward the leg and foot, their yellow color contrasting against the pelvis, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and tarsal and metatarsal bones. Landmarks stay obvious. A lateral sciatic nerve view clarifies relationships that matter when pain patterns do not match a simple dermatomal map. The nerve’s deep gluteal segment is the zone implicated in piriformis syndrome and in posterior hip approaches where careless retractor placement can produce traction neuropraxia. At the posterior thigh, the illustration supports teaching on why intramuscular injections should avoid the inferomedial gluteal quadrant and why posterior femoral procedures and hamstring injuries can produce radiating symptoms that mimic lumbar radiculopathy.
