Description
Running deep to the splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis, the semispinalis cervicis is presented as a lateral profile of the posterior cervical region, its muscle fascicles ascending superomedially from the transverse processes of upper thoracic vertebrae toward the spinous processes of C2 to C5. Posterior to the cervical vertebral bodies, the muscle sits immediately lateral to the spinous processes and interspinous spaces, with the zygapophyseal joints and intervertebral discs forming the bony scaffold deep to its line of pull. Inferiorly, the view naturally brings the cervicothoracic junction into frame, with the scapula and clavicle providing lateral shoulder girdle context while the sternocleidomastoid remains anterior and superficial. Semispinalis cervicis matters because it is a primary segmental extensor and contralateral rotator of the cervical spine, and this lateral view clarifies how the transversospinalis group bridges multiple motion segments in a way that makes small fascicle injury clinically meaningful.
