Description
Oriented to the cranial base with the posterior cranial fossa centered on the foramen magnum, this illustration frames the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve (CN V) as it emerges from the lateral pons and courses anteriorly toward Meckel’s cave. From a superior intracranial perspective you would expect the rootlets to converge into a broad sensory root lying anterolateral to the brainstem, with the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion positioned more anteriorly on the petrous part of the temporal bone. Surrounding skull base landmarks logically include the clivus medially, the petrous ridges laterally, and the dural folds of the tentorium cerebelli spanning toward the posterior clinoid region. A tight corridor. That relationship matters in posterior fossa and petroclival work. The trigeminal sensory root is the structure targeted in percutaneous rhizotomy and radiofrequency lesioning for trigeminal neuralgia, and its proximal segment is a common site of neurovascular conflict where a loop of the superior cerebellar artery compresses the root entry zone during microvascular decompression. Venous and dural anatomy also shapes the operative field, since Meckel’s cave sits close to the cavernous sinus and petrosal sinuses, and small variations can change both exposure and bleeding risk.
