Description
Seen in lateral profile, the dural venous channel of the sigmoid sinus curves inferiorly and anteriorly from the transverse sinus, then enlarges as it approaches the jugular foramen to continue as the internal jugular vein. The sinus lies posterolateral to the cerebellar hemisphere and posterior to the petrous part of the temporal bone, tracking in the sigmoid groove of the mastoid region. Superficially, cortical veins and meningeal venous tributaries converge toward the lateral sinus system, while the brainstem and upper cervical spinal cord sit medial and inferior in the same field of view. Color coding distinguishes veins (blue) from adjacent arterial branches (red) and cranial nerves (yellow) emerging near the pontomedullary junction. A side view of the sigmoid sinus is the workhorse perspective for teaching venous outflow from the posterior fossa and for orienting surgical corridors around the mastoid and jugular bulb. It is also the anatomy behind common otologic and skull base problems, including thrombosis of the lateral sinus, high-riding jugular bulb, and dehiscence that can complicate mastoidectomy or present with pulsatile tinnitus. The relationship to the jugular foramen matters when discussing spread of infection from middle ear and mastoid air cells to the intracranial venous system, and when planning approaches that risk venous injury or air embolism. A critical landmark. Use this rendering in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and ENT teaching sessions to pair dural venous sinus anatomy with lateral skull base landmarks, or in neurosurgical and neuroradiology publications to annotate the transverse-sigmoid junction, jugular bulb, and venous drainage pathways relevant to venography and posterior fossa surgery.
