Description
Along the superior border of the petrous part of the temporal bone, the superior petrosal sinus runs as a dural venous channel connecting the cavernous sinus anteriorly to the transverse sinus posteriorly at the tentorial attachment. A lateral view also places it superior and medial to the internal acoustic meatus, paralleling the petrous ridge as the tentorium cerebelli spans toward the occipital bone. Nearby venous structures typically visible in this perspective include the transverse and sigmoid sinuses, the cavernous sinus region, and bridging veins along the lateral surface of the brain, while the upper cervical spinal cord continues inferiorly through the foramen magnum with lower cranial nerves coursing toward the jugular foramen.
