Description
Cutaway cranial anatomy centers on the superior petrosal sinus coursing along the petrous ridge of the temporal bone at the attachment of the tentorium cerebelli. The sinus sits posterolateral to the cavernous sinus and anteromedial to the transverse-sigmoid junction, bridging venous outflow from the posterior end of the cavernous sinus toward the sigmoid sinus. Nearby you can expect the tentorial edge, the superior petrosal vein complex draining the lateral pons and anterior cerebellum, and the adjacent dural reflections framing the cerebellar and temporal lobe surfaces. Venous channels are rendered in blue, separating the dural venous sinus anatomy from the underlying brain parenchyma. A tight corridor. This view matters because the superior petrosal sinus and its tributaries become immediate constraints in a subtemporal transtentorial or retrosigmoid approach, where the tentorial incision and petrous ridge exposure can place the superior petrosal vein at risk.
