Description
Running in the anterior neck, the sternothyroid muscle is shown as an infrahyoid strap muscle arising from the posterior surface of the manubrium sterni and adjacent first costal cartilage, then coursing superiorly and slightly laterally to insert on the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. Superficial to it, the sternohyoid would be expected to lie more anteriorly, while the sternocleidomastoid frames the lateral neck and the laryngeal skeleton sits immediately deep to the strap layer. Superiorly, the thyroid cartilage and nearby laryngeal framework orient the muscle’s distal attachment, with the cervical vertebrae and base of skull providing posterior context in the same figure. Clear midline relationships are preserved. Sternothyroid matters because it is one of the structures you divide, retract, or spare during common anterior neck exposures, including thyroidectomy, tracheostomy, and laryngotracheal procedures. Its insertion on the thyroid cartilage links it to depression of the larynx after swallowing, and its proximity to the thyroid gland and laryngeal cartilages makes it a practical landmark when teaching the layered approach from skin and platysma through the infrahyoid muscles to the visceral compartment. Small asymmetries in strap muscle thickness are common, but the surgical plane between strap muscles and thyroid capsule stays consistent. It guides safe dissection.
