Centered on the anterior thoracic cage of an adult female skeleton, the costal cartilages bridge the anterior ends of the ribs to the sternum, creating the spring-like anterior ribcage. Hyaline cartilage segments extend medially from ribs 1 through 7 to their respective sternal attachments at the manubrium and sternal body, while the inferior costal cartilages (ribs 8 to 10) converge toward the costal margin rather than inserting directly on the sternum. Lateral to the sternum, the costochondral junctions mark the transition from osseous rib to cartilage, and superiorly the clavicles and scapular margins frame the thoracic inlet above the first rib.
