Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the stylomandibular ligament is rendered as a thickened fascial band descending infero-anteriorly to the angle and posterior border of the mandibular ramus in a lateral view of an adult male. Posterior to the mandibular condyle and temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the ligament tracks medial to the ramus in life but reads laterally here for clarity, with the mastoid region and inferior temporal bone forming its superior bony context. Inferiorly, the upper cervical spine is included, with the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) aligned beneath the occipital bone; intervertebral discs are shown between the lower cervical vertebral bodies. A clean anatomic corridor. Functionally, the stylomandibular ligament is often taught alongside the sphenomandibular ligament as an accessory restraint of mandibular motion, limiting excessive protrusion and contributing to the passive check on wide opening when the mandible translates anteriorly at the TMJ. That relationship matters in TMJ pain workups, where posterior mandibular and parotid region symptoms can be confounded by adjacent styloid apparatus pathology, including an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid complex (Eagle syndrome). Its proximity to the parotid bed and the retromandibular space makes it a useful landmark when discussing surgical planes around the mandibular angle. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching to anchor the styloid process, TMJ, and upper cervical spine in one lateral composition, or in dental and maxillofacial texts when contrasting ligamentous restraints during mandibular opening and protrusion.
