Description
Rising in the superior mediastinum, the superior vena cava descends on the right side of the ascending aorta and enters the right atrium at its superoposterior aspect. From a posterior perspective, the vessel sits anterior to the right pulmonary artery and closely related to the right main bronchus, while the azygos vein typically arches to join the superior vena cava just before its pericardial entry. Inferiorly, the posterior wall of the right atrium and the atrioventricular groove frame the cavoatrial junction. Orientation is clear. This posterior angle matters because it emphasizes deep mediastinal relationships that get flattened in anterior teaching views, including the proximity of the superior vena cava to the right pulmonary hilum and the pericardial reflection where central venous catheters terminate.
