Description
Presented in sagittal section with an anterior-facing orientation, the superior vena cava descends in the superior mediastinum and enters the right atrium at its superoposterior aspect, just superior to the tricuspid valve orifice. The right atrium lies anterior to the esophagus and posterior to the sternum, with the right ventricle positioned inferior and anterior to the atrium across the atrioventricular junction. Medially, the interatrial septum and right atrial cavity frame the venous inflow region, while the aortic root and pulmonary trunk sit more anterior and leftward relative to the caval entry. Color coding separates venous and arterial flow. Clear. This cut emphasizes the caval-right atrial junction, a landmark that matters in central venous access and electrophysiology. Catheter and guidewire tips introduced via the internal jugular or subclavian veins are often positioned near the superior vena cava–right atrium interface, where malposition can trigger atrial ectopy or, rarely, perforation. The relationship of the right atrium to the tricuspid valve apparatus, including chordae tendineae and papillary muscles in the right ventricle, also supports teaching of functional tricuspid regurgitation and right-sided volume overload.
